Gowanus Projects
This 6,000-square-foot artist’s haven sits right on the famed Gowanus Canal, a wonderful spot for inspiring and fueling the creative process. The focus here is on sculpture-based artwork and selected featured artists are given an open platform to showcase their work. If you miss an opportunity to see an artist’s work in person, a digital archive available through their site at least gives you the opportunity to take a look after the fact.
Groundswell
Art meets community meets social change at this 25-year-old organization. The main focus here is education, particularly among young artists. Budding new creators are brought together to refine their craft and learn more about how their creativity can be used to initiate change in the world around them, with a focus on elevating the voices of marginalized people of color.
The Gowanus Studio Space
Local artists looking to learn and develop particular skillsets can take advantage of the available studio space and equipment they might not otherwise have access to or be able to work with on their own. Workshops and focused training gives these artists the means to bring to life the visions they have in their minds. Plus, to stay further integrated with the surrounding community, GSS works with new businesses to help with necessary design projects.
