When New Yorkers hear mention of the Gowanus neighborhood, many of them immediately think of the canal.
Once a thriving shipping hub, the canal’s usage decreased over the years. It also suffered from significant neglect.
Yet, in recent years, there’s been many community efforts to revitalize this waterway and increase its usage for recreational purposes.
One of the groups leading this call for change is the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club.
Learn how this local organization brought canoeing to the community and helped rejuvenate the Gowanus Canal!
Meet The Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club
Although environmental efforts to clean up the Gowanus Canal kicked into high gear in 2013, a group of passionate residents have been leading the efforts for a lot longer.
For over 20 years, the volunteer members of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the importance of this local waterway.
Not only do they understand its importance for shipping and transportation, they also see the value it brings to the community as an invaluable resource for recreation and education.
Canoeing Programs and Events
To help residents gain a better understanding of the canal and the joys of paddling down the waterway, the Gowanus Dredgers offer a diverse range of programs and events all year long.
Programs include everything from guided canoe tours of the canal to sunset voyages to various educational opportunities for adults and students.
By introducing residents to the joys of canoeing down the canal, the Dredgers also highlight the many benefits of this activity. Not only does it provide an ample amount of exercise, it also helps the community clear its mind and indulge in the natural beauty of the estuary and neighborhood.
In addition to the canoeing-based programs, the Dredgers also support a variety of educational and recreational events.
Anyone with an acoustic instrument can join the fun every Wednesday at the Boathouse Jam. Friday nights are reserved for live comedy shows, while Saturday afternoons are reserved for the Shoreline Art Walk that showcases the neighborhood’s various murals and street art.
Plus, there are numerous events that focus on topics ranging from protecting marine life to environmental clean up efforts to first aid courses to water quality – and everything in between.
