The parade’s website describes it as, “A celebration of ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals of the seaside.” The Coney Island Mermaid Parade will feature more than 3,000 creative individuals to start the summer with art and community pride. It is cited as honoring the pageantry of Coney Island through a century of parades. The Mermaid Parade is the largest art parade in the country and it’ll happen less than an hour from our rentals in Brooklyn.
On Saturday, June 16, the parade will start at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue and winds its way to an end at Steeplechase Plaza. The parade is set to start at 1 p.m. and will be held rain or shine. Not only can you enjoy the parade as a watcher, you can participate! There are a variety of registration options for participants to become part of the fun. From a family placement (with no nudity and less noise) to an artistic placement (where mostly anything goes) to registration for classic cars and more, everyone can be a part of this historic event. Just be sure to register beforehand!
Getting to the parade from our rentals in Brooklyn is simple. Though the even itself is not right down the block, the train station is! Just hop on the F and ride it all the way to Coney Island. You’ll be home to boardwalk in less than an hour!
